Happiness Family Farm

Before there is a restaurant meal, there is a field. At Happiness Family Farm, Jared Leaf meets a family growing food that connects their life in Oregon to their roots in Burundi.

Prosper Hezumuryano and Rosata Niyonzima founded the farm in 2016. Their son, Japhety Ngabireyimana, helps carry that work forward. The family supplies local markets, restaurants and CSA members with culturally significant produce.

Jared’s visit puts the film’s question of inheritance into the soil. Farming knowledge travels with people; growing familiar food can make a new place feel like home. In the clip below, that connection begins with something immediate: a lemon cucumber, picked and tasted in the field.
