At Olive or Twist, Samuel Fowler’s cocktail bar in the Pearl District, Jared Leaf encounters the craft of making a drink and the work of making a place for people.
The setting changes the rhythm of the journey. Behind the bar, attention to a pour and the atmosphere around it reveal another expression of Black hospitality in Portland.
Fowler’s chapter widens the film’s picture of ownership. A farm, a food cart and a cocktail bar can each carry a different vision of what to build, whom to welcome and what kind of experience to offer.
